In 2018, Mehfooz was attacked and sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite prolonged hospitalization, three bullets remained in his body until his last breath. Police filed a case against five accused at the Gomtipur Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.
The case came up for trial in the Sessions Court in 2020. The main accused, Sameer alias Lakhota, absconded after being granted bail and did not appear in court. The trial against the remaining accused began in 2022, with accused Gulnawaz alias Sajid sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Ahmedabad City Civil and Sessions Court in 2025.
Unfortunately, Mehfooz passed away a month before the verdict was announced. The three bullets remaining in his body bore witness to his pain and struggle.
